Waxing Do’s & Don’ts

Here are some easy waxing tips to follow before and after your next wax. If you have a specific questions on products I use, or if I didn’t cover something that you’re curious about….shoot me a message at info@hwwax.com or give me a call at 443-794-6729.

  • DO allow 3-4 weeks between waxing. Roughly a quarter of an inch of hair growth is required for bikini, legs and underarms. If you’re not sure, longer is always better.
  • DO consider taking a pain relieving pill about an hour before your waxing so as to temporarily reduce pain and inflammation. If you’re nearing your cycle, you’ll likely experience increased sensitivity.
  • DON’T use peels (glycolic, AHA, retinols, etc.) or dermabrasion on the waxing area for up to 24 hours prior to receiving a skin wax. Also discuss with your technician if you are taking any medication that may make your skin prone to extra sensitivity.
  • DON’T wax for at least 6 weeks after using of Retin-A (tretinoin) or blood thinner medications; 6 months or more for Accutane (isotretinoin) users.
  • DON’T exfoliate the skin for 2-3 days after your wax; DO exfoliate regularly after the procedure using a loofah or a wash cloth to help prevent ingrown hairs. HotWax offers exfoliation services and leave-on products which will help ingrown hairs.
  • DON’T drink alcohol or obscene amounts of caffeine before your wax, as it will increase the pain.
  • DON’T use a suntanning bed/go suntanning 24 hours before a body wax.
  • DO keep the waxed area clean, and try to avoid using harsh cleansers or creams for 24 hours after your bodywaxing treatment.
  • However, DO consider using a light moisturizer (free from Vitamin A, artificial fragrances) the morning of your wax.
  • DO avoid hot tubs, hot showers/baths, sunbathing, exercise before your waxing. Additionally, we suggest you not have sex for 24 hours post wax.
  • DEFINITELY DO avoid shaving between your waxes, as shaving throws the waxing cycle off track, causing the hair to become course, making your waxing experience more painful.
